I'd be interested to hear a lawyer's (or judge's) opinion on whether that's "speech" or not. Everyone always assumes it is. I'm not so sure.

Also, is it "speech" for the school to do what they did? Don't they have a right to determine what constitutes proper (or, in this case, improper) qualifications for their degrees?

Well in theory no rights were violated, the person did make this information public via putting it on the web. However, the charge is insane. There isn't a person on this planet that doesn't have something that could be viewed, by a PC Liberal, as incriminating in their past.

Believe it or not, I don't see this as a "PC Liberal" situation.

I guess that's because I'm completely sick of the current practice of putting one's entire life on the internet. This culture of wanting to be "famous" is disgusting.

In all honesty, I don't care that the young lady got wasted while underage. Hell, I know I did a few times. Point being, show some (un)common sense, and don't make it public.

At the end of the day, the university has complete right to determine who is granted a degree from their institution.

Fire away...

She isn't and, wasn't underage when the photos were taken...
she wasn't with underage people, per the story.

It was simply a pic of her with a undefined bev at a H'ween
costume party...

The school's knee jerk fookin reaction/decision is neither "liberal"
or "conservative", (though it seems to lean toward my dictionary's
definition of conservative, ridgid, Victorian, straight laced, tight
azzed, take your pick), and is plain fookin stupid decision, imo.

See I think it leans more to them being afraid someone might find it offensive and ask why the school didn't do something....either way...it would make the front page of CNN.

Most of the people I knew in the High or the U wouldn't
have been allowed to do anything but go straight to
juvenile hall or the Joint, if a school(s) had reacted like
that, to our stupid freakin shenanigans, circa '60s and '70s.

Hmmm, a wanna be teacher put's 'drunken pirate' pics of herself on the internet and the school deems that behaviour inappropriate enough to deny her a teaching certificate.

Guess I don't see a problem with a university determining who should/not be granted a diploma. If they view this as a lack of good judgement on her part (and I agree this was bad judgement), then I think they should be fully able to deny her a teaching degree (I don't agree with the decision but do beleive they should be able to make it).

I do believe there is a problem for a teacher, politician or cop etc... to 'seem' to promote underage or binge drinking by posting pics of themseleves on the net. Professions like this do have a higher standard IMO, and she made a stupid move by posting it. I'm not sure what 'penalty' is fair assuming this is the first/only time something like this has come up for her, but I do believe the university is well within it's rights to decide who does and does not get a diploma.

This is purely ridiculous.
