Well it's been sold and now has ZERO debt...so lets see what happens. And to all those who said "labor unions aren't the reason for American vehicles being crappy

Owing billions to retirees doesn't help a company succeed.....GO UNION.
Wait until your a retiree.... I'm in a Union, and Chrysler parts supplier, and wouldn't want it any other way. Try affording health care among other things on a fixed income. I'm only 28 but my grandfather, retiree from a Union, is having a tough time with continuous increases in health care, taxes, etc... The Union bene's is the only thing he has going on his side. My 2 cents..

Would it help the union when the company goes under? Seems like backwards logic, parasitic abuse of the company 'help' retirees? Guess that is why the US Congress had to bail out Chrysler in the past.

pay 100% for our health "insurance", here in our RetiredBumDom/Fixed Income situ: that would BC/BS of NC, Major Med Only, with a Five Thousand Fookin Dollar deductible... so, we pay for anything/everything short of the pre-Valhalla Ride illness. I have little empathy for those that whine about their med costs. It's the US Health Care Sys that is absurd, imo. I've not studied the current UAW's contract, but health care costs for current workers and esp. the 20/30 yr-and-out-gang, is HUGE. Toyota, Honda, et al, won't bump into those kinds of costs for another decade or more, if ever. As for unions...I grew up in the MotorCity, 1947 to 1975: they had a purpose and necessity; I'm not so sure these days... Hope Cerberus can wade through and make it a go, for the sake of the "company", brand and employment. Already the GreatWhiteNorth workers want guaranteed jobs: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070514/...rberus_caw_col |

But the U.S. automaker, which is projected to not return to profitability until at least 2008, will take with it responsibility for billions in health care coverage promised to union employees, retirees and their families, costs than are adding thousands of dollars to each automobile made in North America. |

Unions served a GREAT purpose in the period between 1900-1960 when employees were abused BIG TIME by corporations. But now with the insane amount of legal recourse and negative pub capability...unless you're Enron...abusing employees retirement and health care is difficult IMO. Until something is done with the UAW union, American auto companies will never compete with German or Japanese ones.

All this union, non union so called logic is only logical if your in favor of unions or not in favor. Pick your side. Truth be told, the argument is like a dog chasing his tail. As I have said before if the Automakers want to make money make a product that people want to buy then fewer people will complain

Who cares if it will kill the company, it's far more fun to layoff 13,000 employees because employees from 45 years ago are still drawing funds. I'm not saying they aren't responsible for their currently owed bills to retired employees, I'm saying the whole future course needs to be reconstructed.
