Owing billions to retirees doesn't help a company succeed.....GO UNION.

Wait until your a retiree.... I'm in a Union, and Chrysler parts supplier, and wouldn't want it any other way. Try affording health care among other things on a fixed income. I'm only 28 but my grandfather, retiree from a Union, is having a tough time with continuous increases in health care, taxes, etc... The Union bene's is the only thing he has going on his side. My 2 cents..

But the U.S. automaker, which is projected to not return to profitability until at least 2008, will take with it responsibility for billions in health care coverage promised to union employees, retirees and their families, costs than are adding thousands of dollars to each automobile made in North America.

Would it help the union when the company goes under? Seems like backwards logic, parasitic abuse of the company 'help' retirees? Guess that is why the US Congress had to bail out Chrysler in the past.

Unions served a GREAT purpose in the period between 1900-1960 when employees were abused BIG TIME by corporations. But now with the insane amount of legal recourse and negative pub capability...unless you're Enron...abusing employees retirement and health care is difficult IMO.

Until something is done with the UAW union, American auto companies will never compete with German or Japanese ones.

I'm not saying they aren't responsible for their currently owed bills to retired employees, I'm saying the whole future course needs to be reconstructed.

Lets see what kind of employees that we will get with a 30% pay cut, 25% insurance increase, cut in Vacation/Personal/Sickdays. The quality will sky rocket!

My Plant has divisions all over the world. We actually just opened another plant in Mexico. And Guess what the Work that was sent there, for cheaper labor,etc... Is now coming back. They can't find employees that have any skills, for that kind of salary.
