do the two even run on the same freq.?

That is too odd. Land lines do it, but I didn't think cell phones did...

Bluetooth is actually a frequency hopping connection. Once two devices are paired ie in sync, the master device sends a 'packet' telling the slave which frequency to jump to, and so on continuously.
There, that's my laymans explanation... quite possible you'd get that for a few moments...
