Lenova Thinkpad, T series. Robust, reliable. We have thousands at work, currently T42, T43, and T60. I bought a T60 for my daughter last weekend for university.

If you don't want to spend that much, go as cheap as you can and consider it disposable.

Also, you said that he needs it for just checking e-mail and going on the internet - not much point paying more for options and upgrades that he will never need.

Lenovo is the best laptop for business, but $$$. I had a X60T and sold it to get the newer X61T (Santa Rosa chipset).

If he is just a light user, get a Compaq! Should last a long time and a great value. Also the lighter the better.

I do think the Apple has a pretty unit, but a learning curve for that old man over 40. Ha! I am 45...
