Chinese Food and Drug Chief executed

China executed the former head of its food and drug watchdog on Tuesday for approving untested medicine in exchange for cash, the strongest signal yet from Beijing that it is serious about tackling its product safety crisis.

During Zheng Xiaoyu's tenure as head of the State Food and Drug Administration from 1997 to 2006, the agency approved six medicines that turned out to be fake, and the drug-makers used falsified documents to apply for approvals, according to previous state media reports. One antibiotic caused the deaths of at least 10 people.

While I'm against the death penalty, if anyone deserves it, it is indeed this guy. He caused the death of a number of people so that he could make a buck. We have a number of politicians here who are guilty of similar crimes, but here it is not illegal to do such things, as long as the cash is given as "campaign donations".

Here in the land of "nobody is ever accountable", if the same thing happened, there would be no criminal prosecution at all. The media would spin it as a "mistake" or an "error in judgement", and the guy would simply resign his post without any further punishment.
