"Better to die on your feet than live on your knees."

My favorite part was in the Atlanta Journal-Constipation version of the story:

Quote:
Timothy Armstead was at the Washington Mutual Bank on Candler Road on Tuesday afternoon to figure out how someone could have stolen $100 from his account, when a man wielding a fire extinguisher barged in and demanded that tellers hand him $2,000.

That set Armstead off.

Grousing there was just too much stealing going on, the retired Marine put down his young daughter and tackled the robber, knocking him to the ground.
That's all I can stands, 'cause I can't stands no more!

I picture a "Grumpy Old Man" at the bank...

Edit: Here's the link

I would say you were very lucky. There is a reason that bank tellers are instructed to cooperate with bank robbers. Money and material items can be replaced. Human lives cannot be.
Correct and obviously one has to pick his/her battles but the point is still valid that there is far too much apathy in society and the "why should I do anything?" attitude. In this situation, yes, the robber could have had a gun or a knife but given the fact that he armed himself with a fire extinguisher rather than a actual weapon, I think the Marine was reacting to that. I'm sure if the dude had a gun the Marine wouldn't have tried anything.

There is a saying that the best thing you can do is be a good witness but there are times when the situation demands action. If you were armed and a gunman entered your place of work or wherever and started killing people, would you not engage the attacker? I sure would. If on the other hand it is a robbery and no shots are fired yet, I wouldn't play hero and start a gungfight. For me, it is when there is imminent peril of death or great bodily injury that I would feel it necessary to take action. Otherwise, call 911 and be a good witness.

Thank God there are some who are willing to stand up to those who take advantage of others.

Bruce Willis in "Live Free or Die Hard" gave a very good summation on why some people step up and some people step back. I agree you have to pick your battles, but in this case, it's like all the "Die Hard" movies... "It's all about the money". The "bomber" clearly wanted to spend it. If it were about religion, yeah, odds are there is a bomb.

If more people stood up it would be a deterent to some of the stupidity and petty crimes. Dirt bags are on the lookout for those that don't seem to be a threat or are an easy target. They are cowards. If they had the fear of someone striking back, they'd think twice.

Now don't get me wrong, something monetary is not worth dying for, you do need to be careful out there. Sometimes you don't have time to think, you just act. I went after a guy that yanked my chains. I never thought about it, just did it. I fell apart afterwards when I had a chance to think about what could have happened.
