Hey, Ford has completely turned around their reliability in the last 4 years, ya know. If Ford bought BMW now maybe BMW's reliability will improve.

Are you sure of $85B MB value? Any link? Combined DC net worth is Euro 34,155 mil per 2006 annual report. And they actually paid money(600+mil) to get rid of Chrysler.

It's already happening! Ford has been testing its versions of BMW's.

If you're looking at their annual report then I think you're looking at their book value, or the sum of assets and capital. You can't buy a public company for book value, you have to buy the stock. The outstanding stock of DCX is valued at $93.42B as I type, and I estimate that Chrysler is worth about $9B. I couldn't find a market cap for BMW.

For comparisons sake, Honda is worth about $120B and Toyota around $195B, IIRC.

EDIT: 80.1% of Chrysler was sold for $7.4B, and Daimler retains the other 19.9%. I think that means $86B total.

Thanks. I guess my estimate of $50B was pretty far off. At $39B, 46.6% is still more than Ford is worth. In other words, the Quandts could buy Ford if they wanted, not the other way around.

IMO the threats are private equity (probably no big deal), one of the Japanese monsters (not that likely), or someone like Hyundai (ding!). VW and PSA probably couldn't stretch to do it.
