No expert here, but I think you only have to use the data plan for the internet-related features of the phone. Of course, I believe the voicemail requires the data plan.

So if you don't want voicemail, you're good!

It might not be perfect... But it's still the best damned phone out there. Especially if you are a MAC user. The seamless integration is beautiful..

And, I just want to remind everyone.. Even though it's only 8 gigs, now, it's still the best damned Ipod ever made.

They will sell.... Trust me... They will sell.. I still get stopped every day on the street from people who proclaim "I can't wait to get mine.." or "I'm just waiting for the second generation"..
To which I respond.. Why are you waiting for Gen II? Gen I is still better than any other phone out there..

I don't disagree with anything you've said. I just don't want AT&T. I've got them now, and I can't wait to be rid of them. Their coverage is terrible where I live. I wish that weren't the case, but it is what it is.

Exactly my exasperience with AT&T. I have Verizon now and wouldn't switch back for anything. So no iPhone for me

why wait for gen II because it will improve on gen I and fix the issues that might be there. its a great looking phone but what good is the phone with no phone service, and with a service like att/cingular its nothing more than an overpriced ipod

Funny thing is, I'm going to switch to Verizon also - they have the best coverage around here.

Apple reported today that it shipped 270,000 iPhones in the last two days of the quarter -- more than it had predicted, but far less than the 500,000 to 700,000 units most Apple analysts had estimated.
