Acording to CR 20% to 23% of laptop require repair, thats a very high level, therefore its worth the extra $250+/- to have coverage for 3 to 4 years.

My Thinkpad needed its cooling fan replaced in the first three years and my wife's Toshiba Laptop needs a new cooling fan however I did not buy coverage on that machine, hence the need for a new laptop.

Macs take reliability/support prize

Point/Counterpoint

10/29/2007
"Macs beat machines built and sold by Lenovo Group Ltd., Hewlett-Packard Co., Gateway Inc. and Dell Inc., according to Rescuecom Corp.'s second annual reliability report. Apple, which took the second spot last year, blew away the competition this year by posting a score of 51% higher than next-best Lenovo."

Sorry SuperGreg, That is totally misleading extract. That report is soley based on the proportion of users that call Rescuecom Corp, whoever they are, for support!

All it means is that Apple users do not call Rescuecom for support and there can be a multitude of reasons for that...

True, that's what point/counterpoint is all about. To get a true comparison, you would need access to all of the manufacturers in-house service call records, which obviously isn't available. The article was simply provided as another source for comparison. Let's not forget that when your computer is down, your primary concern is to get it fixed a.s.a.p. Apple stands out here with their Genius bar and local in-house repairs, thus negating the need to box up your computer and ship it out for repairs. That is an intangible that many consumers don't include in their comparisons when shopping for a new computer . Now, feel free to counterpoint with "Geek Squad" comparisons .

Respecting your experience is what we're are about around here but from a consumers standpoint (talking about me) when your laptop bites the dust it's nice to know it wont cost you a dime to get it fixed. That goes for desktops as well. Got my 3 year old monitor upgraded free. Didn't even pay for shipping.

More that paid for the cost of the warranty......

Sorry to say that it seems that workmanship across all lines of products has deteriorated. Not to hijack the thread but we had heard about the nighmare refrigerators with ice makers were. Sure enough after 5 repairs that should have cost almost as much as the appliance it now works as it should. Cost to us?? Nothing. Why? a $109.00 warranty.

Lesson?

You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when youre sittin at the table.
Therell be time enough for countin when the dealins done.

If you are getting a mac laptop, I would suggest getting the AppleCare ext warranty. Just a good idea. I had $1000+ repairs on my iBook the first year of use. Second year of use, with no warranty, it was $300.
I made sure to get AppleCare on my MacBook Pro.

(btw blue: MacBook and MacBook Pro are two very different machines)
