Read the article more closely my friend. It's based on # of repairs/market share, so it is comparing apples to apples

Sorry SuperGreg, That is totally misleading extract. That report is soley based on the proportion of users that call Rescuecom Corp, whoever they are, for support!

All it means is that Apple users do not call Rescuecom for support and there can be a multitude of reasons for that...

True, that's what point/counterpoint is all about. To get a true comparison, you would need access to all of the manufacturers in-house service call records, which obviously isn't available. The article was simply provided as another source for comparison. Let's not forget that when your computer is down, your primary concern is to get it fixed a.s.a.p. Apple stands out here with their Genius bar and local in-house repairs, thus negating the need to box up your computer and ship it out for repairs. That is an intangible that many consumers don't include in their comparisons when shopping for a new computer . Now, feel free to counterpoint with "Geek Squad" comparisons .

You bring up the other point that I wanted to make is that Apple is the ONLY one that has retail stores with their Genius bar. If I was an Apple user (I only have iPod products), I would use the Genius bar.

The primary point that I was trying to make is that report is useless for comparing support for PC's to Apples... It's NOT an apples to (oh, you know what I was going to say)...

I'm with Eric. Buying an extended warranty is exactly like buying insurance. You are betting against the house, and the house either wins, or goes broke if they calculated the failure rate wrong. Either way, you lose, over a longer term or larger sample size. Yes, you can win in the short term, if you have a high number of early failures. The only time it is worth doing it is if you can't afford a single failure, because over the long run, they will make money.
