I used to be able to name the 50 states and their capitals... along with all the countries of the world. All thanks to Animaniacs of course... and who said cartoons never taught people anything.

I'd bet you're wrong. In fact I'd bet less than half know the capitals or can name the states on a blank map.

I think I said "many could not"...I wasn't into picking percentages
out of the air. I was also being diplomatic; "many" posters on
most boards I read, have the attention span of a june bug on a
hot skillet and couldn't find their own town on a big state map, .

CNN & AP did a survey a few years ago. On the street in Manhattan, they had random people try to find New York City on the globe. Less than a third of them were able to.

LOL...So much for my reading comprehension. I did test myself on the 50 states (with the lines drawn in) and was able to identify all 50. Just don't ask me the state capitals because I'm pretty sure I'd only get ~ 45 or so correct.

I would not be surprised if half of America did not know how many states there were in the USA. I'm guessing under 20% know how many stars and stripes are on the American flag and what they actually represent.

MrLG,
No biggie...jes' poking!

I did all 50 states also; the Capitols are more difficult, esp. some of the
Plains states, imo.

Knowing this kind of stuff has less and less place/need in today's
diverted and diversion focused, semi-tuned in society, imo.

Tell me about it, they did a 'street test' in Baltimore and asked:

"How many stars are on the Maryland flag"

People were actually answering that there were stars (which is wrong) and couldn't even get the number from the National Flag..

"..ah, aren't there 52 stars?"
"..ah, 25 stars right?"

Come on people, states and colonies..not that difficult here........

People are DUMB individuals are SMART.

ps: secret to the test, 50 stars (50 states, last one was Hawaii in Aug 1959), 13 stripes (13 original colonies).
