Hey SG:

To boot off a CD, you have to be able to get into the bios to put the CD drive in front of the hard drive in the boot order. Since Michelle can't get the machine to even power up, what drive it boots off of doesn't matter. It is likely then the problem is the mother board or a component on it, or the power supply (which is still my bet).

Since the PC still makes a noise when powered on I am not sure it is the power supply. If the power supply was fried it would not provide any power at all I believe. I am afraid it is either the motherboard or one of the components which may short circuits and triggers the "safety" power off feature

Some clarification...

The computer does not make any noise when I try to turn it on.

It only made those noises after I thought it was powered off last week.

Now, when I push the power button, NOTHING happens -- no beeps, no lights, no sounds, no fan running, NOTHING!

(Sorry for the confusion!!)

Maybe check for a fuse or circuit breaker located on the power supply itself?

since the computer was making beep-beep-beep sounds, that could indicate failing RAM memory.
