In all these "100 year reviews" or "Who's most reliable", IMO you have to consider the total models in service over that timespan and also what class of buyer the company gears towards. Here is a real quick and dirty list to keep things in perspective (real oddity is that such few Asian rides made it in):

Euro:

VW Jetta - $16,490
BMW 328i - $32,400
MB C-Class - $31,975

Avg cost for intro model sedan: $26,955

Asia:
Honda Civic - $15,010
Toyota Yaris - $11,150
Nissan Versa - $12,360
Kia Rio - $11,395

Avg cost for intro model sedan: $12,479

US:
Ford Focus - $13,715
Chevy Aveo - $10,560
Pontiac G5 - $15,390
Chrysler PT Cruiser - $15,530

Avg cost for intro model sedan: $13,799

They had all kinds of issues, not just the idrive. The 2002 was bad and deserves to be on that list. The 7 board on RF actually had activity back then It is a great car.

I found iDrive a piece of cake to work with. I think the system is dumb in that, I can pick AC/Heat settings without the computer but...whatever...works fine. I guess the people that complain are those that are use to a vehicle with less tech behind it. To my knowledge most modern cars (in the luxury arena) use a iDrive style system....

You could use touch screens for this but fat American fingers with McDonald's grease on them have a problem with touch screen

Well, think about all the functions that are now in a car. How many buttons can you possibly have on a dash board? You need some type of menu. You can use hot buttons for what, 3 frequently used functions. Mostly everything else you set and leave alone. I don't see the big deal and this from the Challenged One.

The old Idrive in my '03 745 was not nearly as good as the newer Idrive in my '07 now. Although the cars look similar, the newer 7s drive much nicer and are even more refined than the previous models IMO. More power, quieter interior, better suspension, etc. BMW has had 5+ years to tweak the 7s, and I see alot more of them on the road all the time so they must be doing something right.
