can you install other apps while you're at it?

Would I still be covered under my applecare warranty if they find that I have had it unlocked? I guess I can fix that by doing a restore on the phone, right?

The only lousy thing is that from what I understand you lose the visual voicemail when you unlock it. That's one of the nicest features of the iPhone.

I know that. I got a phone unlocked 10 years ago but that was because my contract was up and i decided to change cell providers. In this case unless your going to Europe I don't see the point. Will T-Mobile let someone signup with their iPhone? I don't think so. Remember it's a 2 year contract with AT&T not T-Mobile. Then there's the problem with certain functions no longer working ect ect. So yeah the iPhone is unlocked.....whoo hoo. Personally i don't see the advantage but I'm ready to be enlightened.

I think the IPhone unlock phenomonia is attractive for world travelers and those that have existing plans (Tmobile) and wish to not break out of their contract. You can buy the Iphone unlock if you buy direct from Apple and not AT&T.

If Apple will let you buy the phone UNLOCKED as you say.............Now were talking. What's the unlocked cost without the AT&T Deal?

guys,

Apple has gone exclusive with AT&T in the US so in a way the phone is locked even when you buy it from Apple. Pop in a SIM from TMobile and it will not work.

Here are couple of advantages of doing the unlock:

1. You can install third party applications (well it is a byproduct of the unlock)
2. You can stay with AT&T without extending your contract to another 2 years.
3. You can use your TMobile SIM with no contract renewal
4. You can travel abroad and use any other GSM network/SIM and not pay AT&T the roaming charges.

Disadvantages:

1. You would have to restore back using iTunes if you need warranty work on the iPhone
2. You lose visual voice mail (it is being worked on right now so a fix might be possible)
3. Phone can get locked again if Apple/ATT sends out a new radio firmware via iTunes. Best is not to upgrade iTunes till you hear from the hacker club saying it is ok to do so.

The Unlock will not:

1. Make you better in bed.
2. Give your phone another 5 HP or better 0-60.
