Thumbs down 2008 Land Cruiser: WTF Toyota

Competes with: Land Rover Range Rover
Looks like: A mini VW Touareg
Drivetrain: 381-hp, 5.7-liter V-8 with six-speed automatic; four-wheel drive
Hits dealerships: October 2008
Car companies usually release new models at major auto shows to get the most exposure possible. Supposedly, today’s online reveal of the all-new 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser is in advance of an auto show in Australia next month, but we’re guessing Toyota just didn’t want to unveil its behemoth SUV in the U.S. right now, when it’s seen as such a green-friendly company.

We’re not slighting this new Land Cruiser, though. The outgoing model had plenty of fans, and we’ve gotten quite a few emails in anticipation of the 2008 version. Nearly everything has been redesigned, from the chassis to the suspension to the bruising 381-hp, 5.7-liter V-8 that we loved in the new Tundra pickup. It takes regular gas and tows up to 8,500 pounds. There’s a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual mode. Mileage is rated at 13/18 mpg city/highway, compared to the aging 2007’s 275-hp V-8 and its 13/17 mpg using less-stringent EPA testing standards, meaning mileage has actually gotten even better than the numbers suggest.

Both the exterior and interior have been retooled nicely, though they’re still a bit on the boring side, and the price gets a bump too — up 12% from last year to $63,200, not including destination charge. The new Land Cruiser is longer, as well, to make more room for the three rows of seats that fit eight people. More photos below.

Way to Ruin one of my favorite Suvs! I just may have to buy a 2007 in Protest

AND on a 63+ Suv, HOW are both Bluetooth and Side Airbags NOT standard?

Looks like a Highlander on steroids...which I guess is what it is.

R,
Maybe they put the wrong pic in the link...looks like a China
ripoff of an amalgamation, with a little Martian styling thrown in, lol!

Jes' what I need: a $70G behemoth that handles like a step van
and gets 8 mpg city, 22 hwy with a strong tailwind. ;>)

Looks terrible in my opinion..I mean it just looks like a big bubble.., If you're gonna shell out that much cash for one..there's a plethora of other vehicles that would make much more sense, and look better too..That's my opinion though.

New Cruiser...

Yep the "new" Land Cruiser is ugly that's for sure.

I had an 01 that I drove through Dec 05, I got my 01 Land Cruiser in Oct 00 as I recall.

Anyway, with the exception of the gas mileage I loved that car.

I put 130K miles on it all I did was change the oil every 5K, one set of brake pads and one new set of tires. I got it for 47K I think and I sold it for 27K. The thing looked and ran like it was brand new.

I sold and got my first X3 an 06. So that was a bit of a change, but now I'm on my second one so I like it.

Toyota almost never gets the styling right. The old Land Cruiser looked a bit.......old to begin with. The new Land Cruiser looks like a the Highlander except bigger. The new Highlander looks like an absolute disaster.

You see, unlike BMW designs, Toyota designs never "mature". When the Z4 came out, everyone hated it. But now, many think its "sporty". When the previous-gen Camry came out, it was ugly. It still is.
