Burma/Myanmar - common sense, exit here.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapc...sts/index.html
I understand why they were protesting but I don't consider it "bad" that the government is ending the protest. They told the monks/other protesters that they would be cracking down, now they are surprised some got killed.... Hmm..I'm not.

Wagner, I have to admit I'm a little shocked by your comments. What do you say "should" be happening there? (On both sides)

I'm not about to say, and can't say. My commentary was aimed in the direction of don't be shocked when a military government threatens military action, and then acts. Was there a person who didn't think this would come to blows? Did the government not send out several warnings to end the protest? World leaders knew this would happen, and now act shocked.....
And exactly what comment I made are you surprised about?

Hahah. I thought that might be what you were thinking. No of course I didn't think the protest was bad, just not shocked by the outcome. With "bad by ending the protest" I simply meant, they were quelling an incident.

I thought, optimistically, that they might pull off the Big
Revolution. With the Buddhist monks seemingly united and the general population cranked up, I was hoping it might be one of those rare deals where the ruling military gov't would be embarrassed or forced to come to terms with the population and morph. The commentary/"pressure" on China, their main trading partner, is almost laughable and almost Jr High gossip/pressure-like. The Big C is gonna do whatever fits any of their numerous niches chasing anyone's/everyone's buck, imo. I was glad to see the military force party using some restraint or it could been rivers of blood in the streets.

Kind of an old old story, but back in 1905 in Czarist Russia, a similar protest took place outside the Czar's palace. The protesters were mostly Jews who belonged to a new group called the "Bolsheviks", and they were protesting against the Czar's economic policies and against religious persecution, among other things. The Czar's police ordered the crowd to disperse, and when they didn't, the military was ordered to attack. The end result was around 1000 dead and many more wounded. Some of the Bolshevik leaders were captured, while others fled the country. Fast forward to 12 years later.... The public was much more unhappy now because of Russia's involvement in WWI. A similar protest formed outside the Czar's palace. Things got heated up, and the crowd got more and more angry. Eventually the crowd stormed the palace, and this time instead of fighting back the crowd, the Czar's military joined the crowd in storming the palace, and we all know how that story ended. My point is that if things are bad enough, it will happen on its own. It doesn't need outside help. As long as there is no outside sabotage (i.e. foreign military aid and support to the brutal government), it will happen. Just give it time. (The reason the above story comes to mind is that my great-grandfather was one of the Bolsheviks who fled Russia in 1905. The story goes that they were shooting at him when he crossed the border into Poland. He eventually made his way to NY as many of the Bolsheviks did and although he was tempted to go back when he got word that there would be another revolution attempt in 1917, he decided to stay here)
