Norton Symantec Help!
6 "urgent updates" from MicroSoft this eve. Download, install, full fookin restart, blah blah. Now, when I think I have my system back to normal I see that the ol'Norton button doesn't show up in my toolbar. So, I waddle into Norton and it says my anti-virus isn't "On", when I hit it, it says "Refreshing", which is Norton's way of saying it isn't and won't freakin work and, when I dig into it it tells me I'm not the Admin, can't screw with it, and I must uninstall and reinstall Norton to see if it will work. Besides shooting this fragile, crappy piece of software, what else should I try to make the sumbitch work? And, another question: I have Windows/Microsoft scheduled for auto updates at 3:00 AM; this pile of recent updates was scheduled for Tuesday I had read. I wonder why it didn't "do it" overnight instead of me having to pull it down and install myself? And, I ain't getting a Mac, just to avoid this, . Any comments, good opins and real help would be appreciated. Thanks...mD

md,
I've had symantec for years and years and have hated it more and more. I actually just paid for a new year subscription last month and all seemed to go well, until one day last week my computer started acting up again and i just decided i had enough. I uninstalled norton completely and installed instead AVG Free Edition (google it if you are interested). AVG seems to do the job i want it to (aka right click on something and check it for a virus, autoprotect, etc) but without the huge performance lag of Symantec. My computer boots up about 3x quicker now than when it had symantec, and i have far fewer runtime errors and "ending program" things when i shut down my computer. just my 2cents. |

Norton/Symantec may have been the de facto standard many moons ago, but for the most part, their current products suck.
If you decide to uninstall any Norton product, be prepared to do a complete reinstall of Windows, as there will be traces of the prior Symantec installation in your registry and file folders. There is a way to completely wipe out the Symantec entries, but it's a painstaking process require a bit of computer expertise. It might be best to do the uninstall and reinstall and just keep using the Norton crap until you're ready for a new computer. Nod32 Antivirus and Outpost Firewall Pro are the best subscription-based programs out there at this time; Avira AntiVIR (antivirus) and Comodo Free Firewall are more than adequate free programs, albeit without all the bells and whistles. |

Ah, misery loves company, lol!
My Norton has run fine the past 7 months here on this Mtn 'puter. I gotta believe it was part and parcel of the big Microsoft update/ download/full restart, but WTFDIK?! When I dig into Norton it tells me my firewall/antivirus is not running, I get error code 3031.10 and 3031.6, both of which tell me to uninstall and reinstall Norton...WTF. Not sure I wanna do that based on replies. And, I sure don't want to do a Windows reinstall... I do have and run AVG free, though that is been a little glitchy lately, too. I shoulda skipped the big MicroSoft bs. And, still surprsed MS didn't do the auto download at 3:00 am, instead of me having to go "get it" and do a manual dwnload and install. If our cars were this glitchy, we would never get in them and attempt to drive away. Any other opins? BR,mD |

I installed Trend Micro and dumped Norton about a month ago,
it seems much better. According to CR AVG Free is not as good. However I bet that Norton has updated its software for Micro updates and should work now? |

i, too, use AVG and have been for years and years. i haven't used Trend Micro,
nor have i even heard of it; so, i can't comment on that one. if AVG has been "glitchy" for u lately; i'd suggest an uninstall and re-install of it. good luck.
