Why do people insist on rebadging cars?

Tonight I was behind a 3.0 BMW Z3 with an X5 and M badge which basically said X5M.

Total Looser!

That one is a loser for sure. But here's another one. Someone buys a SL300 MBZ.(Used of course) Takes off that badge and slaps on 500SL.
The why? To impress others i guess. But when someone does what you saw maybe too much meth.

I've heard it's quite common in Asia/Europe to debadge 7's.

You want people to think your pimpin' a 760? Take off that pesky 745...

In some cases it's the opposite. People debadge to downplay what they have. I think debadging is acceptable while misbadging is a crime.

I think debadging is fine... What I don't like is re-badging..

Rebadging within a make is for loosers. Rebadging across makes is for morons.

That depends. Debadging an entry level model (320) after putting on all the trim from a top level model (M3) is the same as posing.
