Was this appropriate?

Carwin Jones and Bryant Purvis (Two of the Jena 6) present the most anticipated award during Black Entertainment Television's Hip Hop Awards show broadcast Thursday night.

My personal opinion: I feel the charges against them are extreme and should be investigated as to the motives of the prosecutor in the case. That said, these two still participated in a crime in which they jumped a single kid and beat him within inches of death. Both have prior convictions involving violent acts and neither should be held up as hero's.

It was irresponsible for the producers of the BET to usher them out on stage to give the award and does nothing to promote race relations. The standing ovation from the audience makes matters worse by condoning the race motivated attack by the Jena 6.

In my eyes this makes them (BET and the audience that stood and clapped) no better than the prosecutors or the individuals who hung the noose from the tree.

can you please post a link to a story about the incident, i'm not mocking you, i just never heard about the incident. But from what you stated, i absolutely agree with you that they should not be shown as figureheads on BET. I don't however believe that the standing ovation from the audience was condoning a race motivated attack, I'm pretty sure they just do that for everyone.

Well, couple schools of thought. If the system in Jena is bias, as reported, then prior convictions in the bias system could be faulty. That said, I don't see it being as much BET's issue for inviting and putting the two on a spotlight as much as it is the viewers/participants that thought it was a good idea. Shows a great deal about the character of those involved.

If it were me accused of beating the person down with a group, I would do everything I could to stay out of the spotlight and get in the best possible graces of the judge I'd be going before (knowing I committed a crime and he was deciding my fate). But that is me, just look around the nation...Tank Johnson taken in by the Cowboys after the Bears cut him for his repeated legal problems...goes to show, no matter what...for the dollar..people will do anything.

In my opinion, it was an inappropriate time for them to appear. The wounds for those involved are too fresh. However, If you watched the show, they only said thanks to those that supported them.

But how does giving an ovation to the two translate into support of the beating that took place? Even the guy who announced the two guys opened by saying he does not condone a 6 on 1 beatdown. In my mind, the audience was not celebrating the individuals, but the fact that a socio-judicial injustice was challenged and in-part defeated.

As for BET as a network, they have lost its value and values since Bob Johnson sold to Viacom. Same with MTV. Reality tv killed the video star.

This issue reminds me of the Mumia Abu-Jamal controversy. Whenever you have peace rallies in Washington, some group always manages to show up with some "free Mumia" signs. And I've heard plenty of comments from the press how these people obviously must support the killing of cops. However, if you actually speak to the people holding the signs, you will find out that they think he is innocent of the crime.

Just because they are cheering these guys does not mean they support the crime. It probably means they do not believe they are guilty of the alleged crime.
