Jazz piano legend Oscar Peterson dead at 82
One of jazz's most recorded musicians, both as leader and accompanist, Peterson came from working class beginnings in Montreal -- where his father let him pursue music only if he promised to be "the best" -- to become a major influence on generations of top-flight musicians. Since blasting onto the world stage with a famous appearance at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1949, the beefy high school dropout amassed armfuls of honorary degrees and awards, including a 1997 Grammy for Lifetime Achievement and an International Jazz Hall of Fame Award. Oscar is one of, if not my favorite, jazz musician of all time. I'm sad to hear of his passing. If I'm not mistaken, he was still touring across North America through last year despite being well over 80.
He was one of the last remaining legacy links to jazz's glorious bop era. He was one of the few musicians who could simply play with anyone, from hard bop to big band swing. As a keyboard player, I simply marveled at the physical mastery Oscar had over the keyboard, as well as the glorious riffs that would emminate. His skills simply defied the impossible. Many great pianists have graced the jazz scene - T Monk, Powell, Brubeck, Garner, Tatum, Evans, Hancock, but hands down, in my humble opinion, Oscar Peterson was THE BEST OF ALL TIME. Go in peace, Oscar Peterson. Your music will play on forever.

Absolfookinlutely Fabulous pianist and musician... Saw him in '94 ish, at Lincoln Ctr with Itzhak Perlman in a duet concert. Breathtaking, imo. Off to Valhalla, where he is now the Lead Piano.
