I watched a special on the new X5 and I am pretty sure they said that the new 4.8 was faster around the Nurburgring than the previous 4.8is. Maybe I am mistaken and they said 4.6is.

OK, I just re-read what I was originally talking about. The e70 X5 4.8 is 10 seconds faster around the Nurburgring than the e53. I now realize that they are probably comparing it to the 4.4, not the 4.6 or 4.8.

Sorry, I didn't mean to insult you 4.6is or 4.8is guys. I just made an honest mistake. Still sort of new here.

4.6is

Fitted with 20-inch alloy wheels, X5 series development project manager Albert Biermann says the new 4.8i laps the Nurburgring’s gruelling Nordschliffe circuit a whole 10 seconds faster than the previous 4.6is flagship.

4.8is
On to the new E70 chassis. Chassis rigidity has been improved, it’s 15% higher now at 27,000Nm per degree. As a reference to show you how good this is, the old BMW M3 E30 race car fully equipped with a roll cage has 22,500Nm per degree chassis rigidity, that’s less than the new E70 2007 BMW X5! Drag coefficient is also better, it is now 0.33cd compared with the old X5’s 0.35cd. Translating the numbers onto the track, the new BMW X5 4.8 does the Nurburgring North track in 9 minutes, that’s 10 seconds faster than the old X5 4.8 time. Despite being larger than the old X5, the weight stays about the same thanks to weight reduction methods like an aluminium engine hood, cast aluminium front strut tower, magnesium carrier for instrument panel, and intelligent use of high strength steel. As with all BMW’s, weight distribution between the front and rear axle is 50:50.

Very intersting. Keep in mind that the new X5 also has a wider track, lower center of gravity, a more car-like double wishbone front suspension, and a new 6 spped auto trans that is supposed to be 50% quicker. The ring is about 13 miles or so, it is very possible for the new X to be faster over that far of a distance with all of these improvements.

One article says faster than the 4.6is around the ring and the other says faster than the 4.8is. Which one is accurate, or are both?

I am seriously considering the GTS as my next car. Why? Simply because of the availability of the six speed manual...
I wish BMW would offer the same...

You'd think they'd at least offer it in the X6 since it's supposed to be an uber-sporty 'activity vehicle'.

specs say 0-62 in 6.5 sec. looks like the 4.6is and the 4.8is are quicker...what a joke!
