Funny, I have an utra portable laptop that I got back in November 2005 that has an optical drive built in (it can burn double-sided DVD and it is +R and -R compatible) and weighs 2.7 lbs.

I am still using it today....Sony TX-670.

Sony has TX line for the last few years which has been ultra-portable, light, built-in optical drive and standard battery last me 6 hours. Built in wi-fi, bluetooth, and even wireless modem (my was Cingular EDGE), but now Sony uses Sprint's version of 3G.

My sony laptop has carbon fiber shell as well.

Check out my post in November 2005 at X5world....

I'm not sure about your older model, but Sony's newer line of ultraportables (TZ-series) do not include an optical drive. Also, I'm not sure what the cost of yours was, but the TZ-series are considerably more expensive than the Macbook Air.

Speed
1.33GHz1 MBAir = 1.6-1.8GHz
Front Side Bus Speed
533MHz MBAir = 800MHz
L2 Cache
2MB MBAir = 4MB

MBAir is also thinner at is thickest point (0.76"), than Sony's is at it's thinnest point (>0.80"). MBAir also has a 2" larger screen and a full sized keyboard. All this at 1/2 the price, go MBAir

I ordered one...could care less about lack of DVD drive, who actually uses these any more on a portable?

The only thing I am worried about is the 64GB drive being too small.

cool....let us know how the SSD is. Do you have a remote server or anything? Maybe you can use time capsule.

My only problem with the SSD is the fact that Solid State Disks will deteriorate everytime it is written on, meaning every time a sector (or equivalent) of the HD is written on and written over, the life of the drive is lowered. There are ways to help slow this process down by the disk writing at random parts of the disk, but heavy usage will bring on the inevitable.

HD motors will die too, so is the SSD supposed to last longer than a HD?
