For once, I have to say that I actually agree with the White House, although probably not for the same reasons. The current government has no relation to the previous government. In fact, I'm pretty sure that there is a law that makes it illegal for Baath Party members to serve in government. So I don't see how the current government can be held financially responsible for the previous one.

The US government should themselves do something to help Gulf War Veterans. Last I saw figures, which was in 2003, more than 35% (over 200,000) of those who served in the Gulf War were currently collecting disability payments as they had been diagnosed with "Gulf War Syndrome", while another 5% (over 25,000) of those who served had already died of the illness. If you saw what these disability payments amount to, you would be ashamed of how we treat these people who served our country and are now terribly ill because of it.

To quote the article:

A provision of the Geneva Conventions that governs wartime rights and responsibilities notes successor governments cannot be absolved of previous mistreatment of foreign soldiers, civilians, and diplomats by past regimes.

And the lawsuit was filed prior to the government being dissolved.

I guess I didn't read the whole article. If that is the case, then it doesn't matter what Bush or the White House says. Although the White House seems to think they are above international law, so it doesn't shock me that they would ignore it in this case.
