I'm ALL for doing anything we can to help the environment, but let me play devil's advocate.
- He has ZERO trunk space, now. What good is a fuel-efficient car if you can't use it to haul groceries and the kids. It's very impractical. - $3,000 Dollars. I am not a math guy, but I'd venture to say that it would take three or four years to save $3,000 dollars' worth of gas. This, of course is not couting the premium you paid to own that Prius. - You build a car to be "environmentally friendly." Yet, what's gonna happen when the guy gets into an accident, or is rear-ended. Can you say "acid burn," an/or "environmental cleaning nightmare"? Again, I hope that we do indeed find a solution. I'm just not sure this is a good one. Juan

Playing devil advocate to you:
actually, what the guy did was raised the floor up. Yes you lose some trunk space but doesn't mean he won't fit groceries or golf clubs. Just not big luggage. So as for the $ and cents, Let's look at it this way. Your regular prius get 50mpg and has a 11 gallon tank giving you realistically ~500 in crusing range. At $3 a gallon for gas, that would be $33 to fill it up every 500.. Now if you can cruise 250 mpg.. your range now is ~2500 which is 5 times the efficiency. mean with 1 tank of fill up... you save $132 and time it goes to get the car filled up. (time=$) So yeah, it will take a awhile to get to $3000.. Just wait time right now for the Prius in the bay area... My brother in law has one and paid UNDER MSRP.. As for the batteries, they used bicycle batteries which are gel cells so no acid burn... So with that said.. I'm a little jealous and I'm gonna rant... The S4 is a ridiculous gas guzzler.. The wife gets realisitcally about 12mpg on that thing.. Audi really screwed up in that regards since we get about 180 miles usually to a 16.5 gallon tank. The M5 with the upgraded Plasma coils is now getting avg of 19 mpg (which is awesome for the amount of HP this thing puts out now with the mods) I've even seen 24mpg on the freeway crusing at 80 mph... Guys with M5.. the Ignition Solutions Plasma coil = good investment. Quote:

Eventually, electrics and/or hybrids WILL be less expensive to buy and own, WILL provide us with a noticeable -- if not substantial -- savings in gas use, and will be as powerful as their gas counterparts. We're not there yet. But I am certain that we will be. Juan

I figured I'd poke into this argument -
Really, electricity is NOT a pollution free energy (it can be, but as of today it rarely is). Will we ever be able to get the performance out of an electric car that we get out of our X5s? I personally don't think so - but I could be wrong. I know that Venturi (I think that's what it's called - a custom car builder based in Monaco) makes a $300,000 electric sports car that revs to 14,000 rpm and has some great performance features - but only generates a couple hundred horsepower and about 250 lb/ft of torque. These are about the same specs as our cars, only we didn't pay over $300,000 for our engines. Hydrogen and ethanol seem to be more realistic (cheaper and more accessible as of right now); they keep most, if not all of the same performance characteristics as the wonderful engines we love (ex: 745h). As I understand it, hydrogen engines require few changes in engine design, and would produce many of the same desirable characteristics of gasoline engines. Then there's ethanol, which to me, makes the most sense. The ethanol is synthesized from corn and can be burned in any current engine when the fittings are changed to stainless steel. Not only would this quench our thirst for traditional engine technology and increased fuel efficiency and dramatically reduced emissions, but it would benefit the struggling farming industry here at home. All this is just sitting in front of our nose - in fact, all gasoline sold in Michigan (and most mid-western states I think) contains 15% ethanol instead of the traditional MTBE. My dad actually has a company car that runs on an 85% ethanol/ 15% gasoline fuel mixture. It's here, there's no need to spend billions on development, and it would benefit multiple segments of society. Maybe it just makes too much sense... |

Do you think the Ignition Solutions Plasma Coil is a good option for the M3 or X5 3.0i?
Sorry to hear about the S4's gas mileage....maybe just tell her to take it easy on the gas pedal.... Quote:

Thats pretty darn impressive. Quite honestly, I'd really like to see hybrids take off. I would seriously consider one to lower my demand on fuel as a daily driver. That hybrid Escape sounds nice but its probably going for over sticker.
