What the hell is going on I guess they don't need as many stations with the record profits they've been posting.

Damn you Chavez, damn you to hell!
![]() J/K. Down in my area they are still mainly name brand fuels, it is actually difficult to not find a name brand. I guess the locals are out to collect the dollars in Jersey.

That's weird. Over here in California there's always Shell, Chevron, Mobil, Unocal 76 all on the same block. I haven't seen an Exxon station for years though. Either way its almost the same stuff anywhere you get it since it all cames from the same pipelines from the refineries, only thing that differentiates the brands is what they add afterwards.

I thought that BMW recommends top tier gas stations. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of the top tiers in the state. It just seems that many stations have changed from top tier to the 'Independants' if that's the right word. I really have to go out of my way now. There is a Sunoco on the NY portion of my commute but the premium is usually $0.40 per gallon higher than NJ.

L, I see that on our trips back to NJ, seeing the Kidz:
all the former Mobil stations in south Joisey are now LukOil stations. They have decent pricing there, too. At least we are helping foreign relations with Russia's biggest oil company... LukOil: http://www.lukoil.com/ BR,mD |

LukOil is all over Philly now too... and like MD pointed out, Southern Joisey. I remember thinking WTF happened to all the Mobils? Sunoco stations were another that changed to what I thought were generic stations around Philly. So you're not alone in wondering where did they all go over in that area. I wish I knew.

I'm told that most of the gas comes from the same refinery and the only difference is the name on the outside of the tank. It has to do with distribution costs and contracts between refineries.
Some add their own additives such as Techron from Chevron but the bulk of the gasoline is just gas. |

It depends on geographical location.
Chevron is very popular in the west because well, its HQ is in California (right down the street from my relatives :p). On the other hand, it is harder to find here, though not rare. In the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, ExxonMobil seems to have the biggest presence, and Shell is popular too. 7-11 is fairly big in central VA. Lukoil and Gulf are practically nonexistant. 76 and Arco, popular in the west, are also practically nonexistant here. |
