Apparenlty the US Congress has very little to do these days.

Investigating MLB over steroids from 2000 and beyond, useless Spectre calling the commissioner of the NFL in to discuss how he handled the whole Patriots debacle. I was under the impression the government was suppose to RUN THE GOVERNMENT not maintain accountability in sporting events. Seems to me there simply isn't enough to do on the hill these days. I would have thought the current recession (yes we're in one), wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, illegal aliens, FEMA issues, problems with NAFTA and other trade agreements, the ever diluted value of the US dollar and their own personal scandals would have been enough to keep them busy.

I can't believe there isn't more outrage over this. These people are being paid to, apparently, investigate sporting events. Quick hit, if the commissioner of a league, regardless of sport, makes a ruling in the league that is the rule, there is no negotiation and if there is it is done by owners in the league, or players unions, not Congress.

I'm amazed, utterly amazed, that news agencies have seem to let this take the back burner. As if this type of oversight is to be expected in sports. It's time the government got their fat and lazy hand out of everyone else's business.

Commentary over.

Good opin, Big R...
typical "work" by the elected geniuses.
Gov't by accretion: it just gets bigger and bigger and bigger...
and, nothing of a real priority, every really gets addressed, solved
or fixed, imo.

The current sports "study" is simply turning over rocks looking
for stuff and arm waving; the real issues, they won't touch.

Next..the US government will start calling NCAA officials on how they handled Michigan's Fab 5..or the countless other violations that have happened to schools recently or in times past...This is getting ridiculous..Where will it end?

Wagner,

Good call man! I was taking all this in at face value, when suddenly my mom commented to me "Why is Congress spending our tax dollars investigating a game with bats and balls instead of working on health care, national defense, and the economy?"

And it's so true: CNN, NBC, ABC, they're all reporting on it and airing the live hearings like it's a life-and-death event. Instead of posing the bigger question: "Why is Congress spending time on this???!!!"

Waxman made a statement indicating regret that US taxpayers had to pay for the charade.

Maybe I'm too cynical... but, what do you expect-- it's an election year. Nobody in Congress is going to do anything to rock the boat, nothing groundbreaking or controversial is going to get decided.

The folks in the House are too busy running their re-election campaigns. And one third of the Senate is also busy running around trying to jockey themselves into position to come back to the feeding trough for another 6 years.

Absolute waste of government resources. I've been screaming about this to anyone who would listen.

Next thing Congress will investigate WWF wrestling for steroids and debate whether or not it is a real sport.

Baseball and Football should police themselves and suffer the consequences like any business. As cheating is exposed more people will tune out. The more Athletes are exposed the less their contribution to the sport will matter. Records and fame are meant for those who excelled without cheating. If baseball used the science and chemistry which is widely available we would not have the abuse seen today.

Problem is Baseball prospered when Mark McGuire and Barry Bonds where hitting balls out of the stadium. MLB took a calculated position on the Steroid issue by ignoring the abuse in exchange for HUGE profits.
