Washers and dryers
I need to buy a new set of washer & dryer. I want Whirlpool Duets but I'm not sure if I want to spend the money because I have a buttload of other expenses coming up. A set of those Duets will cost me about $2000 for the "base" models. Are there any good, cheaper alternatives? How about the Maytag Neptune series? Any other suggestions? Because of all these new expenses it does not look like I will be modding the X5 or the Boxster anytime soon. I am however, going to be looking into new tires because my gawddamn Pirelli Scorpion Zeros are howling like a set of Mickey Thompson mudders and they're driving me crazy! I hate them! |

But, at this point it is my money and mostly my decision. I am hoping to find a good, cheaper front loader alternative to the Duets. My Scorpions are the original version so maybe the newer version that Kewl has is better. Mine seem to have plenty of tread depth and they have about 17K miles on them so wear shouldn't really be an issue. In my experience, Pirellis just get hard and loud earlier than other tires. I'm thinking about Toyos or Kumhos as they both recently added 19" sizes. |

-they have 4 rug rats and do 3 loads a day -they are sucked in by the $brand and are trying to keep up w/everyone on their block. After a few decades of householding, we've had a few diff sets of W&D, but imo, Kenmore, et al, are fooking fine. We currently have KitchenAid Superba W&D which were like 300 and 400 bucks. Work like a charm. Consumer'sUnion may have some picks, but we've had maybe one glitch in decades of our w&d set(s). A friend of mine in the biz tells me that Fridg.,KitchenAid, et al, are made by same mfger w/diff bells and whistles and models and levels...dunno, but, There are other things to go top shelf on than machines that wash&dry your skivvies, imo. I'm in complete agreement as well. I'd recommend the Kenmore, as you can get parts and service for these from any Sears store. We've had just a regular old set of W&D's from Kenmore for the past 15 years and between me, the wife and 3 kids we seem to have gotten by just fine

FWIW, we have a set of new Maytag High Efficiency hardware, and I think it was worth the extra money. The soap is a bit more expensive, but you use less, you also save a lot of water, and over time the clothes last longer. At least, they seem like they are holding up better after a year of use. We replaced a set of old Kenmore stuff that died, and my wife swears by the new set. The kids clothes come out a lot better than in the old set. I think the set ran us about $1,500 or so. I can't remember exactly.

The kenmore front loaders are a good alternative... one of the top rated washer and dryers and a little cheaper now. The Netpunes are old news so go with something else. We have the maytags now but will eventually switch to the kenmores.

Kev, having just gone through this myself, I'll give my $.02....
I was all set to go with a super duper set of W&D -- I mean why not, you keep 'em for 10 or so years right? Maybe even longer? Then I started reading into all the problems the extra 'bells and whistles' bring forth. For example, having a digital 'touchpad' with a circuit board is nice, however after time the stuff becomes corroded because of all the humidity/water. Not good. In other words, a mechanical timer is better as far as reliability goes. Dryers pretty much do the same thing. Just buy based on size. For example, will you need to dry a king sized comforter any time soon? Size is really the only issue with a dryer. They all dry very well. I went with a decent quality Kenmore washer and dryer set. The two together cost about $700 and I bought a service contract (we'll see if I need it). All in all I would say stay away from the touch panels and LCD displays and all the bells and whistles, IMHO... P.S. They make top loading energy efficient machines now too, which is what I went with. PPS If you do some reading on the 'net, the earlier Neptunes had major issues with mold growth on the inside of the machines. Be sure to read up on any specific model/manufacturer you are considering buying. You'll always find problems with any brand or model, but make sure they are not really bad (i.e. mold growth). |

Do your research before you buy..some points +
1. Solid Subfloor. if you plan to install the W&D on the second floor or on a subfloor that is not solid, and the W&D happen to be the front loaders with high RPm spin cycles..good luck. the whole house will shake once the spin and rinse starts. These dudes spin at really high speed. the LG I have spin at around 2200 RPM and although they are placed on concerete there is still some shake though not that much.
2. Sears sells Kenmoreand their replacement/extended warranties are normally higher. I went with best buy and a 5 yr replacement/inhoiuse repair for the LGs ran me $139 for both. 3. LG is a well known brand in europe. IMO the W&D look really good, work great and are whisper quiet. These are prolly the most super quiet machines in the market. do check out the LGs. These LGs can be stacked too if required and are big heavyduty machines 4. Sanitary cycle a must forall these super duper dirty laundry. 5. Front loaders will save you LOTS of water and electricity. Stay away from Maytag, their quality is going down. (heard this from 3 diff sales people in bestbuy, sears and Lowes) good luck
