It looks bad for the northern Gulf Coast. I have heard about 800k people w/o power in southeast FL.
This storm is shaping up to be another Ivan for someplace along the northern Gulf Coast. It crossed the state intact, which is very unusual, and is now in the Gulf, strengthening itself. Prayers go out to whomever is affected by its next landfall. The Gulf water is very warm (90 degrees), and there is little shear. In short, there is nothing really to hold back its intensification. I am afraid there is a bad chapter yet to be written in this story, somewhere between Texas and North Fl.

Actually, I think that one was in the caribbean. I have others from the office and from some islands here. Our water is not as blue as that.
It was a strange feeling last summer. In our area, we had 6 straight weeks of rain and wind, at various times under hurricane or tropical storm warnings and watches. It started in August, and went until the first of October. It was like coming out of a tunnel, and seeing the sun for the first time. The humidity was lower and the sun was shining. It was really a weird feeling. It was summer, then 6 weeks of hurricanes, then Fall. Very weird.

lol here in miami. flew home yesterday morning for an extended vacation and to help my parents and family.
we lost power last night after 12 temporary outs, and then nothing. lots of wind damage. luckily, our house which survived andrew intact was spared. would send photos but gotta find digital camera. our 13 year old generator failed this morning. ran out and bought the last generator at northern tools (home depot, etc) sold out at 7am this morning. have 5700 watts pumping into the house. all gas stations are closed (no power). we do have satellite TV and DSL but no air... LOL its now a category II and following a funky path. it could turn around and come back! yee haw! i went through andrew, and that was so much worse. this was nothing. however, last time (andrew) power was out for 3 weeks. hopefully we'll have something in the next 2-3 days. -drex

I am really getting tired of being hit by hurricanes! Last year, right in the middle of Ivan. Still trying to get my house repaired from that. Dennis a few weeks ago. Now to worry about Katrina.............AARRGGH!!

I feel for you Doc. This Katrina is turning ugly in a hurry. It may yet head west of you, but NWS says now it could be Cat 4 before landfall. Already a 2 @ 100 mph.
Buckle up and stay safe. ps - you know, I don't think non-Floridians quite understand this hurricane deal. After last summer, I feel like NY'ers did for each other after 9-11. I hurt for every fellow Floridian that has to deal with this mess.
