I have used Ontrack's EasyRecovery Pro with great success. Only problem is the $499 price!
Ontrack, who have a confusing and extensive product line, do have some cheaper options but you would need to look at them to see if any of them would do what you need to do. Another option is Data Recovery Wizard which is only $70. Their Pro version is $90. They have a comparison to Ontrack (which always need be considered with caution).

A friend computer HD died, it looks like the head crashed, and it is unable to read the boot sector, I used http://www.r-tt.com/ and was able to recover about 98% of all the data about 147 GB.

Reminds me of this story when they recovered data from a hard drive they found from shuttle Columbia.
