I have used Ontrack's EasyRecovery Pro with great success. Only problem is the $499 price!

Ontrack, who have a confusing and extensive product line, do have some cheaper options but you would need to look at them to see if any of them would do what you need to do.

Another option is Data Recovery Wizard which is only $70. Their Pro version is $90. They have a comparison to Ontrack (which always need be considered with caution).

so far these guys are the best. I've recovered personal computers, laptops, and even data / partitions on server scsi drives.

I also do this as a part time business ;-) I have a copy of Ontrack EasyRecovery Pro - what is it you need done?

A friend computer HD died, it looks like the head crashed, and it is unable to read the boot sector, I used http://www.r-tt.com/ and was able to recover about 98% of all the data about 147 GB.

I purchased a Time Capsule (for Mac), works great.....the Mac has Time Machine software built in.

Sorry, just realized you were talking about recovery not back-up.

R-STUDIO 4.2 $79.. Nothing compare to what he would had lose if the data was not recovered, this is the computer at his repair shop.
But like always I told him many time to do backups but hi never had time, now he want to setup some type of backup system!
