Theatrical Floppers will be fined

The NBA announced to its teams this week at its annual pre-draft camp that fines will be imposed on players starting next season for clear cases of "flopping," ESPN.com has learned.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3416579

The league office has yet to determine exact fine amounts for offending flops and how fines might escalate for repeat offenders, but in-game arena observers and video reviewers will be instructed to report instances of theatrical flopping for potential punishment as part of postgame reports on officiating and other matters.

The league's pledge to crack down on flopping was conveyed to team representatives at Tuesday's competition committee meeting in Orlando.
NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson confirmed the new policy Wednesday night saying: "What was clearly expressed to the committee is that we would begin imposing fines next season for the most egregious type of flops. When players are taking a dive, for lack of a better term."

Yeah. I think his name was mentioned last night in passing when the subject came up.

LOL. I like the rule.. I guess you could argue why take it out of the hands of the ref.. but at the same time they are letting the ref call the game as they see it, then reviewing it and fining. But then if its a $5000 fine from a $90,000 paycheck.. who's to say that the team won't reimburse you LOL "end of year bonus".

Who knows.. we'll see if it will stop players from flopping.. or if they'll just get better at it.

Thread hijack:

Who do you think will be in the finals? I'd like to see LA vs BOS

Ever since the Hornets got knocked out by San Antonio, I have been wishing for a LA v. Boston matchup... for nostalgia sake. LA v. Detroit would have been good too, but not as sexy. I couldn't imagine Kobe exchanging kisses with Rip Hamilton right before tip-off.

The NBA is incredibly inconsequential these days... no one cares but a select few.

I know, right?
Seriously, La v. Bos is better for the league than La v. DET. The league has been promoting the Boston Three Party all year. The want their return on the investment, not to mention Kobe's run for the MVP (the MVP should have gone to CP3, IMO). As well, La v. Det is better than San Antonio v. [insert team name here]. Stearn was praying that San Antonio did not make it back this year. San antonio is fundamentally sound, but not exciting to watch.
