FEMA gives away $85 million of supplies for Katrina victims

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- FEMA gave away about $85 million in household goods meant for Hurricane Katrina victims, a CNN investigation has found.

These items, stored by FEMA, were meant for Katrina victims but were given to state and federal agencies.

The material -- from basic kitchen goods to sleeping necessities -- sat in warehouses for two years before the Federal Emergency Management Agency's giveaway to federal and state agencies this year.

James McIntyre, FEMA's acting press secretary, told CNN that FEMA was spending more than $1 million a year to store the material and that another agency wanted the warehouses torn down, so "we needed to vacate them."

"Upon review of our assets and our need to continue to store them, we determined that they were excess to FEMA's needs; therefore, they are being excessed from FEMA's inventory," McIntyre wrote in an e-mail.

He declined a request for an on-camera interview, telling CNN the giveaway was "not news."

Government at its finest.

Ask yourself...Is this who you want in charge of your Medical Care? If Democrats have their way you won't have a choice.

I understood that while Carter set up FEMA, the mismanagement in question (during Hurricane Katrina) happened on someone else's watch.

What has Republican mismanagement got to do with the Democrats? Just asking as a bemused observer.

(PS, my healthcare works just fine, and I don't have a dog in the US election fight)

Sorry JCL...Government is Government and regardless of the intent the end result inevitably falls short of what was promised. I'm in the health care industry and have been dealing with insurance, HMO's and Government health plans in the US for over 15 years.

I'm also in a unique position to say that I have voted for as many Democrats as Republicans in my entire voting history and I have voted in every election. That record hardly makes me a partisan or extreme in any sense of the word.

"What we've got here is a failure to communicate..."
Strother Martin, The Captain...Cool Hand Luke, 1967.

I suppose I'm one of the few here that feels the
system(s) and program(s) and politico(s), regardless
of "party", are screwed up, ineffectual, self-serving,
special interest pressured, and bascially idiots...

I get a kick outta the gang that feels "their" guys
could/would do "better" and make this beggar's soup
taste better, work better or, be more effecient or...

FEMA, et al, while possibly good intentioned, couldn't
find their fannies with both hands, similar to most of
the gov't@"work" operations, imo.

I'm sorry, but this was not "mismanagement". Mismanagement would indicate that this happened by mistake. This is called stealing, and people should go to prison.

I find this so rediculous that someone points out a case when the law was broken, and millions of dollars were stolen, and so obviously this means that anything the government handles is "mismanaged"??

That's a pretty absurd conclusion. The reason this sort of "mismanagement" does not happen in private industry is because if someone did this in private industry, they would be prosecuted and end up in prison.

How about instead of calling it mismanagement and accepting it, you write your elected leaders and demand accountability. Maybe if we prosecuted government employees who steal, then this sort of thing would not happen.
