I hope I did the right thing

A few days ago, my girlfriend and I were talking and she kept saying things like "when we're married, we can do this". I then told her that I never plan on getting married (in general). I do care for her (even though her 15 year old daughter is a PITA). We've been together for almost 14 months now, and I'll admit, our relationship has been rocky. Sometimes, I am glad I'm with her and sometimes, I wish she would leave me the hell alone. She would get pissed if I didn't call her at a certain time, or if I tell her I'm doing something with someone, she'll lask a million questions. At times, I feel I'm walking on eggshells around her. Basically, I have to watch what I say to avoid an argument. I sure hope women aren't like that in general.

I do care for her and wouldn't mind just living with her. I know there are common law marriage laws out there which would classify a long term living situation as being married.

You did right . You are confirming your intentions right up front. She wouldn't like it but that is the way it is. Maybe later it will change however the "rocky" comments and the possesiveness on her part might not be a good indicator of the future.
Just a little experience of 24 years together on this end.

You absolutely did the right thing. You shouldn't have to walk around on eggshells. If it's like this now, it's not going to get better.

I know I'm far from perfect, but I'm an easy going person. I know she would do anything for me (and I would do anything for her). It's just the newness wore off long ago. Her attitude has improved over the past few months.

Maybe I'm too nice of a person, since I put up with a lot of her crap. Thanks for reassuring the fact that I was very honest with her.

You're not going to have new forever. The question is which newness are you talking about. New as in best behavior on her part or new as in excitement, pounding heart etc. If it's the behavior one, get the hell out while you can.

If she sticks around, she is going to try to change you. Fourteen months is not that big of an investment, but it is enough time to know who you are with and if you want to stay with it. If you are questioning it, might want to take a break and see if you miss it.

If you can avoid losing your man card and keep her under control when she is out of line, I think its ok for them to act a little possessive, provided that it doesn't get out of hand. IMO it shows how much you mean to them in a way. Being able to put up with crap goes along with being in a relationship.
