OK medical professionals
I cleaned and disinfected the area then attempted a bandage which due to the location failed. I then took the next step and used crazy-glue which worked to stop the bleeding. How long to I leave this alone and how do I remove the glue? I'm guessing I do nothing and it will heal under the glue. Eventually the glue will come off with the old scab and dead skin. I'm going to have quite the scar because this thing needed stitches. Good thing it happened over an earlier scar I got when I was a kid when I was attacked by wolves. That is another story. |

I've never heard of anyone putting any sort of glue in an open wound to stop the bleeding. Is this a common practice, because it just doesn't sound healthy.

True story about the wolves though. I've got scars on my eyebrow, cheek, stomach, arms and legs.
Long story short. Neighbors had wolves as pets and being a young boy I wondered in their yard to play with the doggies. I guess they thought I was lunch. |

Wouldn't something like WD40 be carcinogenic, all the more in an open wound?

I know they use glue, I have had it done to me before in the ER, but i didn't think it was jsut basic krazy glue. I at least would hope they had something safer because that stuff would not be good in the bloodstream.

You don't put the glue inside the wound, but rather oppose the edges of the wound and glue the outside of the skin. Glue inside the wound will delay healing, leave a foreign body inside the wound, possibly lead to infection, etc. Additionally, for all this to work well, you cannot apply the glue to a wound that is actively bleeding. Glue doesn't stick well to blood. Crazy Glue is a cyanoacrylate compound. So is the medical grade stuff. The medical version has some differing properties, of course, as regards sterility, viscosity and delivery devices, but it is nonetheless very similar. I used it on my son's foot laceration at a friend's home a couple months ago. Did fine. Don't try to remove the glue. You are correct, in that it will come off as the wound heals under it. Usually 5-7 days. You can wash the glued wound with soap and water, but don't scrub and don't apply any creams or ointments until the glue is gone.
