Recent investment bone head move.

Most of my investments are tied up in long term diversified investments but I do keep a separate Fidelity trade account with about $10,000 for basically gambling on the markets. This is a short term or high risk play account that started with $500 so I've done OK to get it up to where it was not long ago.

Enter my last BRILLIANT idea.

Sirius Radio...

Long before when the rumors that Sirius was going to buy XM I had an idea. XM stock was trading about $15 a share and Sirius was at about $3 a share.

My idea was a gamble betting the doubtful merger would happen and thus the Sirius stock would rise somewhere close to the XM price or at least double.

Reality is I've lost about $5,000 so far and I failed to take into account the combined debt of both company's which has pulled investors back.

Now what do I do...Take my lumps and get out or let it ride?

LabGuy,
Few questions:
-So, you bought at ~$3/share? Maybe ~2500 shares or so...
-And, it's in a taxable acct?
-And, you want the "change" back into your play acct?

Also, Mercedes just signed a contract with Sirius to install Sirius radios in 80% of their line in 2009.

It HAS to go up to at least $6 a share

Yep...$3 a share about a year ago.
Not a taxable account 401K
Still going to remain a play account.

"about a year ago" or less than 366 days or, more than 366...

short term losses are a good punch against any gains, (short or
long term), in your port., tax-wise for year 2008.

I realize the 5G loss is not gonna make you miss lunch. The
bottom line question you have to decide is: is SIRI ever gonna
be back above your 3buck waterline, anytime soon?

None of us knows that answer...if you don't believe it will in
some time frame, sell the sumbitch and move on, with either
your short or long term loss.

I was in SIRI, substantially, but at about 1.49 a share; I sold about
half my position in the low 30s, early '01. Yes, I wish I had sold
all then, lol! Still holding with Stop at a buck/trailing stop at .95.

I've made good dough on it, but the sumbitch is going nowhere and
burning money like a kid at the carnival.

Play accounts are fun, though I tend to do some playing inside a
401k as that keeps the tax situ moot.

Funny enough I just checked. Exactly 365 days ago today. 7/31/07 closed at $3.01 a share.

I'm stubborn and I'm going to hold out until a merger announcement. Problem is my Play account will remain tied up in a poor performing stock.

Oh Well...There's always Las Vegas I guess.

LabGuy,
Bonehead move: if every investor, amateur, retail, pro, hedge fund
picker, et al, would lose a finger for every bad buy/sell decision,
most of the investing world would be walking around with fingerless
palm stubs, imo.

Don't beat on yourself...stock picking, even mut. fund picking is
tough, imo.

My point was did you buy it 366> days ago, or less?
If less than 366 and you tossed it, it's a nice ST loss.
A LT loss is fine, too.

Fwiw, I'm holding mine, (~5,000 shares), with my stop(s)
as I noted. If it gets back up, I'm fine...if it stops out,
I'm still fine as I made a bundle selling the other 5K shares
at 29+.

I miss the days of the regular big paychecks rolling in over the transom...
