Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Friday called for a $1,000 "emergency" rebate to consumers to offset soaring energy costs amid fresh signs of a struggling economy with the nation's unemployment rate climbing to a four-year high.

Devils Advocate... All the older people up here, who would otherwise freeze themselves to death because they can't afford the doubled heating cost. My house is pretty damn efficient (and not huge) and its gonna cost close to $5K just to keep the bugger at 68º, We had it toasty for about $2K back a few years ago. Think about the F.I folks here.
