What do you think of a US deserter?

A guy who deserted from the US Army and fled to Canada was ordered deported back the US, his refugee status claim denied. His argument was that he did not want to participate in an illegal and immoral war and also that he should be allowed to stay because he had made a life in Canada.

When I first heard about this story a few months ago I thought he should have been deported back immediately. What persecution would he face if returned to the US? He'd be prosecuted but not persecuted. He volunteered for military service and when he was told he'd be going to Iraq decided he didn't want to play any more. Tough cookies I say.

Apparently he's not the only one.

More than 25,000 American soldiers have deserted the American Army since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

I would have supported his stay in Canada, but it was his fault that he signed up in the first place.

Here is my first opinion,

If you enlist in the army, you make a salary, they pay to train you. The entire purpose of your job is for war.

So, if when we go to war, regardless of opinion, you decide to bail, at the very least you should be expected to return all the salary paid to you, plus interest and you should have to repay the military what they spent to train you.

Every war is considered illegal and immoral by someone. If you are a soldier, you can express your views by voting for a President/Congress that doesn't want to be there.

But deciding not to serve the duty you contracted to sign is also, illegal and immoral.

You signed up...Now you deal with it...If you sign up for the army, guess what? there's a chance you get to go to war...Get a clue...

Dishonorable discharge for this schmuck at the very the least....

I believe the military should be entirely voluntary without a draft with the exception of a war on American soil where ALL men of age are required to obey the call if summoned by our Government. Women would remain voluntary.

As for this guy...He joined and accepted the responsibility. He should have to re-pay the government with penalties for any and all benefits he received which would include any training cost, housing, food, transportation and any financial compensation he received during his enlistment. He should then be charged with desertion in a military court.

This is a bit of a tough one. Its easy to stand and say F-him, but never having been in the military, nor seen war first hand to know how it would psychologically affect me... In my opinion, the reasons this guy states are pretty BS. The whole starting a life deal and all. However, if he could not handle war, or if sent back would be a danger to his fellow soldiers by being unable to do his job properly, then what? I dont know. The American in me says desertion is treason, but the person in me says what if I was in his shoes.

I say the US Government and taxpayer flip the bill to give him a new home...that is the liberal way!

Wow! Well said! I agree. I don't think any of us have any ideas of the front lines. I can't even imagine. Due to this I feel we can't judge his actions. He should have looked at all consequences before enlisting. BUT we do NOT know the whole story. Like what if his family pressured him into service etc. I agree he needs consequences but let's not create a village mob here. Me? I'd never join the military and should a draft occur I can't tell you how I would react but I know it wouldn't be good as I think drafts are 100% wrong. Finally I'd vote for him to stay in Canada if he paid a fine etc I see no issue w that.
