"If we banned fast food ads" kids wouldn't eat it. Yeah, sure, I guess the parents that take them out there are not responsible at all for sucking? --rant-- I guess it is just more pussfiication of the USA where it is everyone else that messed up  Look..your kid is a fat @ss because you feed him 1400 calorie meals and then let him sit in front of a PSP or Wii for the next 6 hours. If that little bastard was out running around, he'd burn off those calories. Oh but that is right, we outlawed recess in school, and team sports encourage bullying and "tag" is way to violent for little Jimmy....

I agree when my daughter was young we did not have soda in the house only seltzer , today she still drinks seltzer. We only went for fast food about 4 times a year, for a cute toy they were featuring, as parents you need to provide a good example.

When I was younger I didn't have video games, I had the backyard! Instead of a new nintendo game it was a treehouse or sandbox. And I remember being able to peddle my ass off all day long on a bike and never get tired or even winded! So now I have the metabolism of a shrew!

I wasn't permitted to play video games when I was a younger child as well. And we rarely ever ate out, and obviously I wasn't allowed to consume sweets like brownies or fruit punch. And I turned out okay........sort of.

If only modern parents had more of an active roll with the kids as ours had with us. Don't buy them a wii, build them a treehouse or swingset... And riding the bike around kept me in great shape, and I always remember going to bike traces/trails with the folks! I always had a natural attraction to tools and working on things, so not only did dad let me take my remote control cars apart, he would help put them back together showing me the proper use for tools and how things work, giving me the basis for my career!

McDonald's was around then, soda with sugar was served in schools, school lunches were, hot-dogs, hamburgers and other not so healthy foods. We need to face the fact that our modern society is lazy, parents are busy and both usually work. Video games, bad parenting and society is to blame. You can't regulate behavior. When will politicians learn.

When i was growing up, my mom was a health food nut, long before anyone ever even thought of eating healthy. The other parents in the town used to mock her for making me, wheat germ pancakes, fiber cereals, etc.
My house had no soda, very little sweets, etc. As a result, I used to go to my friends house and eat cookies from their stock. I wouldn't mind dropping about 40lbs. today.. The point is, even good parenting isn't going to stop a kid from eating sweets and playing video games, if that's what he wants to do. Yes, of course it's important to encourage good behavior, etc. But not everything is controlled by the parent.
