The short answer is, I don't know.
The longer answer is, broadcast is not the highest level of display. Blu-Ray, many video games, etc. use faster HZ.. Just don't ask me specifics cause I'm sure I don't know. Also, some people use their TV's as computer monitors also... It might also be for future applications.. But to be 100% honest, I have no idea.

I think HDTV can run at 120 Hz, but I have no idea what the benefit of 240 Hz will be. The human eye can only respond so quickly

Like B-Line, I'm not exactly sure why but LCD's went from 60Hz to 120Hz to reduce motion blur. Plasma's are 480Hz. I'd say it's a good thing LCD's are getting faster.

I think the simple answer is to sell more sets and increase prices. Sony does like to be the "one upper" on other manufacturers too.
