Proxy

Can any of you give me proxy address's with port numbers? They block some random sites here at work along with email....and they block sites that list public proxies .

How can a proxy server help you get passed the company firewall? The proxy masks your real IP when you are outside of your firewall, not when you're behind it.

They only block a direct connection to site. Like if I try to connect to yahoomail, they block it. I don't think they'd block me connecting to a proxy through the browser. They are blocking my first connection, not tracing where I am connecting to through the proxy.

I don't think you understand the concept of a proxy server. Keep in mind that the firewall could be blocking the website based on the keywords, part of domain name, or content of the site. But here's one for you to try: 204.196.142.32 Port: 80. Now try it and you'll understand what I am trying to tell you.

But anyways, good luck.

Ok ok, you win . I remember when I was in highschool, they did the same thing, but when I used a proxy then, it went through.

RE: 'puters at work...as an aside, it is interesting to see the posting activity on some sites, (espc. some stock sites), that occurs between "work/office" hours, and then falls off precipitously for the "drive home", and then slightly recoups after dinner time and "kids down" time. But, for many sites I peruse, the 8 AM-5PM time is "post'EmUp" time, lol!

Way back when I was still tied to the whipping post, the Joint blocked nothing, but there was a nerd in IT that had access to all the crap we all "looked at". Not a huge deal, then. I realize many co.'s are trying to keep the lid on, "work time-wise".

With all the viruses these days, they keep things pretty tight around here. It's a nusiance when you need to urgently check your personal email though .

As the resident "nerd" at my company responsible for security, I thought it might be good to explain something.

While your local IT Department has access to everything on the network, I will bet you that they couldn't care less about what sites people go to on the internet, or how much time they spend on it, nor do they have any interest in reading your emails or documents.

It's not up to IT to be the company "how are you spending your time at work cops", that's the responsibility of each department manager/head and HR. It's akin to the situations where an employee is sitting at his/her desk reading a book or the newspaper or talking on the phone. Now if HR comes to me and asks to see logs of what sites employees are going to, or how many IM conversations they are participating in, I merely have a report run and hand the results to HR. It's not my job to oversee how productive anyone is or isn't being during the day, unless they work for me I also will not track nor provide data on anyone within my own department and specifically exclude them from any tracking systems, I'm not going to be perceived as "internal affairs" for the IT department, it's not fair to me or anyone else in the department.

G: Lol! Congrats on being the headNerd...I probably shoulda used a diff noun;
actually it was my bro-n-law that I described. We weren't that big of a joint and IT, in a smaller co. 5+ yrs ago, was not what IT is in most companies today.

As the former VP of strawberries, both fresh and frozen, "they" weren't looking up my chute too often, nor did I have much time for message boards then.

I remain amused at the volume of message board posting during "work/office hours", though...here, or on any board.

no offense was taken, sorry if that's the way it came off.... When I started at this company ~ 3 years ago, there was an undertone of IT being the "productivity police" which I quickly put a stop to and gladly it hasn't come back, and mostly because I can just hand reports to the SVP of HR and walk away.

The ironic thing is that i'm on the internet a lot during the day and it helps in my job, i've actually found issues with our connectivity before the monitoring systems on occasion
