It was really crazy, I was having Lunch in UTC at the time. I'm sure the government will pay BIG time on this case.....

We have had them before (plane crashes) and we will have them again in SD. I'm just thankful it wasn't a commercial liner.

The government doesn't "pay"

Um they don't have money, they have YOUR money so essentially you pay

Kind of like suing an insurance company for some ridiculous amount, only goes on the backs of those paying the bills.

And it is very sad that two people and a child died, but it seems like an honest accident so far. No misconduct. The pilot had some "issue" with the plane. I'm nearly 100% positive he did everything possible NOT to hit a house before ejecting. I thought you "sued" because a person knowingly did something to you that they could have avoided?

I'm in the flight path of FT. DETRICK and as a result A10's pass over my house every few weeks. If one had a problem and had to crash land, should I be able to sue them for that?

I guess the military training exercises aren't allowed to have accidents.

Hmmm....not sure what the legal ramifications are....if any....

I am sure the pilot will go in front of a VERY rigorous Navy/Marine review board. Let's assume there was no negligence on the part of the pilot (these guys are top-notch. You don't get to "play" with an F-18 Hornet unless you are the creme de la creme). Let's assume the pilot did everything in his power to maneuver the jet away from a populated area prior to bailing.

Is the government still liable at that point? If the ones killed had been active-duty US military, they are prohibited from suing the US government. However, since these were civilians going about their business, it can open up a legal can of worms. The best and most sincere course of action is for the military to offer very substantial compensation to the victims' families. These civilians did not sign up to have F-18s crashing through their roofs.

Yes, the govt pays bigtime for damages, even though you can't sue except for very narrow guidelines - and yes, pilots are trained to stay with the aircraft for as long as possible to try to avoid causing possible incidental damages/deaths - some have stayed with the aircraft all the way into the ground in an attempt to avoid loss of life - the govt would prefer to have a talking pilot to help understand what happened, so to hopefully avoid a repeat situation

I and many San Diego people would disagree that he did everything possible. I will wait for the report before I judge but my question is: you have canyons on 2 sides that are 100% open land. Why didn't he crash into the canyon? Look at the pictures (I know exactly where it is) there were other places than a busy residental street. Heck it was nearly 1230 land on the highway that runs on either side. Just my 2 cents... Wasn't this the first time the guy flew alone?
