No one can possibly know their taste in clothes or music, so thoise are non-starters. Gift cards are great too.
The thing they love most about Christmas is spending the day at the mall with their friends between New Year's and Christmas, power shopping and bargain hunting with gift cards or cash they got for Christmas. They are very proud of themselves when they come home with $10 jeans, or 2-for-1 sweaters, etc.
So, it's not the money so much, but it's what they accomplish with it afterwards that they love.
FWIW.

I just may do that. It's not that I don't want to give them money, I'd rather see the excited look on their face when they unwrap the perfect gift. It was so much easier when they were young.
