Circuit City To Liquidate...

Whether one "liked" them or not, I don't like to see a chain like
this go under...

They were some competition for BB, et al.

It is always bad to see competition reduced. I went in to one of the Circuit City's to be first in the round of liquidation and closing. (Some stores are already closed.) The prices the liquidator had set were stupid. Most things were about 10% and it was a surprise if they were 20% off - all off regular retail. I know they'll eventually get rid of stuff but I just walked out.

Also, I had heard that a wealthy Mexican businessman bought a ton of CC shares the day they announced bankruptcy. Might they come back re-invented like Sharper Image is apparently trying to do after Chapter 11?

PNG/K,
That Liquidation "Sale" is typical: a liquidation company is now in control of the goods for sale, and
their job is to get as much dough as they can, as they own the stuff. And, a "Lig Sale" tends to suck
in the consumer who thinks he is going to get 80% off or some great deal. Only the leftover junk will be
on fire sale. As for the stock, imo it will be worthless; the initial Chap 11 is turning into Liquidation as in,
other than real estate, the shares aren't worth the paper they are printed on. As for the RE, who the hell
needs a store or block of empty stores these days.

Sign of the Times, I think...they won't be the only big name to go off to Valhalla in '09, imo.
BR,mD

Edit, from latest in WSJ:
"Golden Gate Capital was considered a leading bidder. Another was Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego, who acquired one-quarter of Circuit City's stock after the bankruptcy filing."

Maybe, like the Phoenix, they can pull it out of the fire. But, very difficult in this US mkt, imo.

Don't forget about Starbucks closing ~600 stores over the summer as well! It was a tough year and it's about to get worse I am afraid!
