Barely Used Car Value Question

We are looking at an '08 Z4, that has about 1000 miles on it. Original MSRP was about 41, and they are offering it for about 39k. Even though it only has 1k miles, it seems to me I could have bought it for 39 brand new.

Any ideas on what an appropriate counter would be? Edmunds say about, though I am not sure how accurate that is.

Get a listing of several other ones within 500 miles, rank them by mileage and year. Take the top 3 and see how they compare - I'd tell the seller that I have 2-3 others that are very similar but with different mileage. Tell them that the other sellers are very motivated and that you like the 1k car a bit more and if they could come down $X (I don't know the exact number to tell you- that will come from analysis of the other cars on the list) you would buy the car from them.

Once you drive a new car off the lot, it is "used". Thus, when you drive off the dealer lot, you've just thrown a chunk of cash out the window. Who is "they"? Dealers obviously want to try and make some money off it, but $39k is decent for a dealer offer. If it's a private party, you can search around perhaps.

they is a dealer, the same one I jsut bought 2 cars from last month. It just seems that only 2k less than msrp is a little high for a used car, even one with only 1k miles.

YJ: I agree it is really stiff. And, that orig List Price meant it was not a
loaded Z to begin with; maybe that's why they are trying to hold you up.

I would shop around, be patient and when "yours" is still sitting there in a
month, I suspect the stlr will be more amenable, esp. since you are not
a walk-in.

The Z4 NEVER had a good resale or sales history. I owned a 2005 3.0i and while I liked it never found it to be overly high quality, hence why I went back to the X5.

The Z4 had a 5k+ rebate for many years including the '08 as far as I know. I got mine (MSRP 51k) for the mid-40's, If I recall correctly it was 42k so a major discount.

The used ones don't seem to hold value terribly well either. I would offer 30k if it were me and even that may be a bit to high.

Remember when negotiating the kind of person who would purchase this car from you. How many people honestly could have their sole car be a 2 seater roadster? Very few. Negotiate accordingly.

I would think that the dealers thoughts are to sell it for cost.

Has it been titled, if not it has more value than a used car.

my wife is now looking at a 330 vert they have. it may be a better deal than the z.

Well, once you TITLE it, it's used. Offer 37K. Depends on how bad you want the car. Because it is so 'new' they will be cautious in taking a big hit on it. As with a MY 09, they can move it relatively easily for the next 7 months.
