Wonderment for Microsoft Mavens...

Gee, I haven't asked a 'puter question in a couple of weeks...

I have my 'puter set for auto download of MS updates in the
middle of the night, and most seem to come down and install fine.

I just did a check to see what else is floating around and I got this:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86
Date last published: 1/27/2009
Download size: 248.4 MB
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is a full cumulative update that contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and includes cumulative servicing updates to the .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 subcomponents. The .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update provides important application compatibility updates.

I have not done it yet, but wonder why it did not install via my auto update deal?
Do I need it? Do I want to download it? Pretty fookin big file, even for my fast Comcrap connection.
Any opins are appreciated, with the exception of buy a freakin Mac.
Thanks, mD

I believe auto updates is only critical update and this is not a critical update.

Its good to install it.

Yes, it is a recommended update, not critical, so it didn't autoinstall. Go ahead and install it.

My settings on Windows Update automatically install critical and recommended updates, but not optional ones. This one didn't autoinstall for me, it was in the queue. Looks like it failed on Jan 29th when a large number of other updates were installed.

I installed it today, and didn't have any problems. Took a few minutes to download, and longer than that to install, but it went through.

Hard to say how important it is, because I don't know what applications I have loaded that may use the dot net features, or how many of those features are used by websites I frequent. I figured it was safer to install it than not, for security reasons.

I generally install the Microsoft-based updates EXCEPT for those that I know that I won't use. .NET framework is something that would be used on websites so I would install it. Also, that one is classified as a "High Priority" update.

Some Optional ones that I don't install are "Windows Search 4.0", "Office Live Add-in", etc.

Thanks, Maties...
I'm gonna drag it down and install it.

Was just a bit confusing as I get lots of auto downloads;
now, I understand why it might not have installed in the
Auto mode.
Thank you, mD

Jeff, you ruined it. I though we could get through a Windows thread that actually contain useful responses without someone mentioning the M word. David, it's not too late to lock the thread before they find it.
