Whatever you do, try to spend more time using the golf clubs than buying them.

i agree with most of the advice above. i work at Golf Galaxy part-time and i'd strongly suggest that you get at least a general fitting where you have your club head speed measured. that should tell you what flex club to play. i'd recommend that if you swing over 95mpg with a driver, the flex should be stiff. anything less than 65 mpg should be a senior flex.
as for the x22s, they are a very good game improvement club with a lot of technology to help out your game and make it more enjoyable. its very forgiving on mis-hits and with the low center of gravity, you'll be hitting nice high shots into the greens. there are other manufacturers that are just as good if not better, but it would depend on what feels best to you, how much you wanna spend, and what you hit the best. Adams, Cleveland, Nike, Ping, Cobra, TaylorMade, etc all make game improvement sets that are priced differently and sometimes you're paying for more for R&D/brand name than you should IMO. try a few sets of game-improvement sets especially ones with a hybrid included instead of a 3 iron. a hybrid will become your best friend IMO since its very easy to hit and you can probably hit it straighter than a wood or driver off the tee.

Thanks! What are the chances of a place like Golfsmith "dealing" on price?

After all these years, I am still playing my TaylorMade Firesoles offset irons with the rifle shaft. It's super old skool now but great feel and super forgiving. If you're >15 handicap, buy some old clubs off ebay/craigslist and start hacking away. Firesoles or the Ping G2's are a good start.

I played w/ the firesoles, decent clubs, switched over to Ping's very forgiving if you play less then twice a week, last summer I bought Miz. MP62's... great clubs..... don't ever buy clubs unless you try it out first.......

I think you've received a lot of good advice, Gresch.
If your goal is to minimize your cost for the clubs and just go out and have fun, eBay or craigslist is a good option if you know what flex you need and like a particular club. X-16, X-18 or X-20 Callaways would be good choices, IMO, but I wouldn't recommend the "pro" models of those which are smaller and less forgiving. If your goal is to improve, I suggest working with a golf pro or a store that will fit you properly and let you try out the clubs before you purchase them. Personally, I don't like the look of hybrid clubs. I usually carry a 7-wood instead of a 3-iron. My current irons are Nike forged CCis which are muscle back design (the regular CCis are cavity back). A little above my ability but I'm still trying to improve and like the feedback they give on each shot. Last edited by haigha; 02-24-2009 at 01:35 PM. |
