Search the forum, lots of good info already posted. It pretty much comes down to buying into the lenses, with the majority seeming to prefer Canon, IMO.

I notice a lot of people claim that the Nikon d90 has better image quality and other mention that one of the strong points of the Canon was that the lenses cost less and there are more available.

This is a very Ford vs. Chevy kind of thing. I am a declared Canon fanboy. I love my 40D. When it comes to the magazines and expert opinions about image quality and all the fine little points of that I think that for the vast majority of people, those differences are negligible. They really get very nit picky about it and it's easy to get caught up in the minutia of the comparos. Granted, to some people that stuff is critical but not for most.
Personally, I prefer the controls, ergonomics, and the overall system that Canon presents. The Nikon dSLR's I have handled, and I will admit it's limited, I have not liked the controls and the feel was not as substantial or comfortable as the Canon. That might be because I was not looking the Nikon D300 which I think is quite different that the typical D60's and D90's. I have played with a D3 a bit and that is just a different league in every respect. I would say that one of the selling points of the D90 is the HD video capability but from what I have read, it's really very limited especially when compared to the Canon 5D Mk II. Price wise it's a big difference but I just wanted to point out the limitations with the Nikon.

I guess I'm the only outcast with A Pentax K100D... nice camera, but I am still an ameture and don't even know all the features/settings properly yet. Maybe I'll play with it some more on my next photo set.

Suave, no disrespect intended but why a 90 or 50D?
Big bucks, add in couple of other dedicated lens of their species and, it soon adds up to seriousazz dough. If you aren't shooting professionally or, even serious head strong amateur, I think they are like a Ferrari for milk runs; not that I wouldn't like either version. D80 is no slouch and 40D isn't either; both serious dough with a couple less bells and whistles that most of us here, even us photo nuts would not miss or notice, imo. But, good luck on the hunt. You're asking the wrong question.
The question should be do you prefer canon or nikon lenses, depending upon the type of photography that you do, or see yourself doing. You'll wind up upgrading the bodies every so often, but your glass you'll keep for a very long time. That being said, I'm partial to Canon L series lenses.

thanks for the inputDavid you are right they do cost a lot but the good thing is that I will be getting it with all the points I got from one of my Amex card The Nikon d90 or the canon 50D will cost me about the same there will only be a $12 difference, $1400 vs $ 1412 and if I had more points I would have look into less expensive camera and a good lens.

I'm with Gresch. They are both good cameras, and both Nikon and Canon make some good lenses (and some not so good).
I am partial to Nikon, but at this point it is probably more habit than anything else. I know the cameras, like the controls and ergonomics, and have a collection of Nikon glass, so I wouldn't change over. I was looking at the D300, but it was too heavy for me, and more than I need. If I needed to replace my D70 today, I would pick up a D90.
