If you think PC Mag is a good source of AV/AS reviews and recommendations, then we disagree. I prefer looking at real data from sites that do thorough analysis.

BTW, mD's post was written concurrently to mine.
Oh, chill out.

I'm surprised that trying to clarify that what you wrote is not a fact but rather an opinion is contentious for you.

I mistook this for a thread where the OP wanted accurate information on the different AV/AS products available.

And for the record, I think Norton is better than it was but would not recommend it to anyone for the reasons I have outlined earlier.

vegasX5,

If you don't want a whole "suite", then I suggest looking at Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware (which I currently use).

Like motordavid, I use CCleaner regularly to clean out cookies, temporary files, etc. as I tend to use Chrome, IE and Firefox... It's useful to use the CCleaner option to mark the cookies that you want to keep -- such as xoutpost.com It's good to run CCleaner before you run a disk defragger.

I doubt that everyone who uses Mac's could be classified as "clueless Mactards"
even if they are not educated about security.
I don't think they are any different than ignorant PC users who
are ignorant on security.

What I do know is that some folks who use Mac's like to stir the
pot because they know some folks are gonna take the bait....

Even with malware detection, you aren't safe from phishing and some other types of online scams on either platform.

What's with the passive-aggressive posts? This is X5world not XBOX Live. I took issue with meaning of a statement you made about AV/AS and you have tried to make it personal.

I can't publish the VirusBulletin data here but fortunately, ESET has a nice summary:

Want the best antivirus software? Compare antivirus software solutions now.

Personally, I'd recommend the OP going with a tried and true solution rather than the latest hot "Editor's Choice" from PC Mag especially given that Symantec still apparently has customer service, logistical and site management problems.

User ratings:

Amazon.com: ESET NOD32 3.0 Antivirus System - Windows DVD: Software (4.25 stars and some of the 1 star reviews are from other products or unrelated to the product itself (which vendor to choose))

Note that I would recommend purchase through ESET's site since there is a newer version available there and you're getting it directly from the source. Or alternatively through Newegg.com:

Newegg ESET which has a free upgrade to version 4 (also look at the 86% 5 star reviews there).

Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Norton Internet Security 2009 1User/3Pc (4.25 stars but look at the 1 star reviews which show more serious problems than the ESET ones)

Amazon.com: Webroot Spy Sweeper With Antivirus 3-PC: Software (3 stars)

I agree with haigha with how NOD32 offers some of the best protection in the business. I would also say that Kaspersky AV or Internet Security is right up with NOD32. I'm a Kaspersky user, but wouldn't mind switching over to NOD32 under the right rebates.

Another vote here for ESET NOD32. I like it much better than Norton.

I like AVG. The free version works fine for most users. If you or a family member often gets themselves in to "trouble", then maybe I'd recommend one of the bigger suites, or even the AVG pay version.

Purchase Antivirus and Security Software at ESET. Buy Antivirus Programs and More.

Symantec Store Software Products

Since everyone seems to be comparing these, here are links to purchase

I'm a Mac user, so I had to search for "anti virus software"

Freee?

AVG is good but it missed on a few of the viruses on one of my computers. I use the one below and highly recommend it.

Download FREE antivirus software - avast! Home Edition
