Blackberry Curve outselling iPhone

Blackberry Curve outselling iPhone

Blackberry's ubiquity is paying off.

Although the iPhone has won hearts and minds with its groundbreaking design and its slick style, the Blackberry Curve is winning the sales war so far this year, according to market researchers at The NPD Group.

Part of the reason? Availability. While Apple's iPhone is an AT&T exclusive, the Curve works with all four major U.S. carriers.

Though NPD does not reveal its exact sales figures to the public, the firm ranked Research in Motion's Blackberry Curve the No. 1 selling smartphone for the first three months of 2009. The iPhone finished second, followed by another Blackberry, the touch-screen Storm.

"Verizon Wireless' aggressive marketing of the BlackBerry Storm, and its buy-one-get-one BlackBerry promotion to its large customer base, contributed to RIM capturing three of the top five positions (in U.S. smartphone sales)," NPD's Ross Rubin said in a statement. "The more familiar, and less expensive, Curve benefited from these giveaways and was able to leapfrog the iPhone, due to its broader availability on the four major U.S. national carriers."

The results reverse a trend that at one point last year had the iPhone outselling all Blackberries combined.

Yep they had a great quarter

Apple still had a strong quarter, as the iPhone 3G led to 1.6 million new subscribers for AT&T. Apple may get another sales boost this summer when it releases the iPhone 3.0 software, and many industry watchers expect the company to have a new smartphone as well.

OBTW.......I'm flying thru that touch screen keyboard.....

Blackberry UMA with t-mobile sounds pretty darn attractive though.

I shoulda got the curve - I changed from b'berry world edition (?) to the storm and my fat fingers are no good for the touch pad. Time to change.

As for the iphone, will never even consider it with AT&T - crappy coverage at least here.

After reading reviews on CNet and other places, I am considering getting the older Blackberry Curve. It is supposed to be much easier as far as hammering out text messages and e-mails compared to the touch screen Storm. I also heard the Storm is a little slow compared to other touch screens from Samsung. The iphone seems to be the best technology out there. Unfortunately it is only available through AT&T for the time being. Verizon is much better than AT&T in the Atlanta area. I stopped counting how many times the call has been dropped when my friends call from their iphones. The apps are great though, but too bad they don't have one where you can actually use it as a phone.

going on two years with the iPhone and (obviously) AT&T. No complaints. Love my iPhone, and I've been able to use it in Europe, Canada, Alaska, Mexico, and the Caribbean... and I've never had reception issues here in the US.

You are lucky you can enjoy it where you need it. It is notoriously bad in Atlanta. Laughable in fact. All of my friends who bought them defended it at first, now they just laugh when a call is dropped because it happens so much it is just expected.

I had to switch from AT&T to Verizon when I moved into my neighborhood a few years back because AT&T was so bad in this area and I was an 8-year Cingular/AT&T customer.
