I am not a HUGE hockey fan, but I do know was a great player... and, by the way, I am liking the new rules, too... they can actually pass the puck across <gasp!> two lines! The game seems to be faster now.

Hull was a definately a great player, and I enjoyed watching him work his magic for the several years that he played here in Detroit. The Red Wing's 2002 Stanley Cup championship roster had an all-star cast and he was one of the key players.

The league seems to be losing many of its "stars". Crosby may fill some of the void, but others need to start stepping up.

And I agree with Juan, the new rules seem to have helped with the flow of the game, it's faster, and scoring is way up.

I have no problem with a guy like Hull retiring. He dissed the game a lot and I find it ironic that he decided to quit when the emphasis in the game seems to be turning to those in better shape with great skating skills.

I guess he just felt he was unable to play competitively with these new rules.

with the end of the clutching/grabbing era in the NHL, someone like Hull just couldn't keep up with the speed of the game.

I was never a fan of his. He was a selfish player and a self-promoter. That being said, he could put the puck in the net!

He did play at the elite player levels but I do agree that he was a bit of a whiner. I remember his tantrum when he was not selected for either a Canadian Olympic team or a World Cup team. He was ready to renounce his Canadian citizenship over it.

He didn't renounce it, but he has dual citizenship so he was able to play for either country. Nice position to be in for an athlete.

You are correct. His mother is American. He started playing for the US National Team in '86 when Canada passed him over, I guess he holds a grudge.
